Getting Reacquainted

Well, it's official: Dad's not at Basic Military Training anymore! He graduated on Friday, in a ceremony that was livestreamed over Facebook. It was a pretty brief ceremony and the camera never showed his face but it was so beautiful to see all those young men and women become proud members of the US Air Force!

While that was going on the situation continued to fluctuate--some trainees were held after Basic from going to tech school because they were supposed to fly and the military deemed that unsafe, and things changed seemingly every hour--people were leaving, people were staying, people were getting sent to a different base than was planned. Fortunately Dad's base for tech school is in TX, so all he had to do was get on a bus for hours and hours.

Once he arrived on base, the waiting began. His actual start date for tech school wasn't supposed to be until later in March, so he was just having briefings and being kept busy in the mean time. The good news is, he had quite a bit of time to talk on the phone! The kids all got long stretches of daddy time, and of course he and I got to catch up on all the news.

Dilly just about broke his heart, she talks soooo much more now than she did before he left! She told him about her booboo (I broke the news first haha) and all kinds of things. Some of them were even understandable! Like when she says "Ilayou Daddy," he knows exactly what she means.

It's been a long couple of weeks with the sow giving birth! Fortunately the last difficult part of farrowing is now behind us: my dear friend Shanon came out to help castrate on Sunday afternoon! It was not fun but it never is! And at least it's behind us and all the piggies are recovering nicely. After that we were joined by a dear couple of friends from church, who went for a walk with us and stayed on for dinner and gave the kids some much needed attention and fun. Monday I tried to recover; Tuesday my dad came and rototilled part of the garden so I can get ready to start planting! I will feel so much better when I have carrots, beats, turnips, and the first row of potatoes in the ground. (First I'm working on removing as many grass roots from the soil as possible!)

Finally, here's a tentative bit of good news: Dad and his class have been given the opportunity to start their training a week early! That means, if all goes well, he might be able to come home a week earlier than anticipated! Say a prayer that his whole class pays attention and tries hard so there's no reason to hold them all back!

I'm going to work on another post tomorrow. I feel very strange about this blog now that virtually every mom in America is turning into me: stuck at home with all their kids and having to stock up and cook their own food! So I want to share a few tips about preparing for the long haul living at home with your littles. Stay tuned!
